Theme-based or Thematic Learning.

What is Thematic Learning?
As the world becomes more and more connected, a novel education system has emerged which takes into consideration the child’s innate qualities while enabling him/her to adapt into a unique niche.

A thematic approach of teaching and learning is an approach wherein many areas of curriculum are connected together and integrated within a theme. Each skill area of the curriculum is connected to a topic which is referred to as a “theme”. It allows learning to be more natural and less fragmented than the usual method of learning where children take in only the teacher’s perspective. Theme-based learning fines tunes a child’s expertise across multiple fields and equips him/her in applying learnt skills in every day life.

A brief on how Theme Based Learning works.
Learning through themes gives students an opportunity to perceive learning as a connected process that has application to real life.

When a theme is a centre to learning for a given period of time, each student explores it in an individual manner which involves innovating and researching the topic in-depth resulting in problem solving at the end. Learning through theme-based curriculum combined with field trips, interaction with experts, building etc becomes more relevant.

To ensure effective learning, dividing learners into groups and engaging them in different activities like drawing, writing, singing, building, dancing, constructing, acting etc. is the best practice. It leads to more real and deep learning as compared to rote learning.

Examples of Theme Based Teaching:
Consider an example of teaching the learners about transport through theme-based learning:
In this method, language and literacy can be inculcated as:
1. Developing the vocabulary by teaching various means/modes of transport (nouns) -
- Various motions of the vehicles (verbs).
- Engage in writing activities.
2. Mathematics -
- Making them count the number of vehicles.
- Comparing objects by size.
3. Scientific Inquiry -
- Teaching about the working mechanisms.
4. Geography -
- Understanding different geographical areas by telling which mode of transports works where.
5. Art and creative -
- Using clay to make models of different transport.
- Drawing different vehicles.

Rabindranath Tagore School of Excellence believes in and follows Theme Based Learning.
Theme-based learning is a superior method for young learners as at their age the brain is at the stage of peak development. Holistic development needs concerted efforts from teachers in order for theme-based learning to be effective. The same is not true for traditional methods of teaching which is still widely used by most of schools.

Rabindranath Tagore School of Excellence (RTSE) follows the pedagogy of theme-based curriculum. RTSE is one of the few schools which follow the theme-based curriculum with an aim to inculcate values and skills in students and help them become leaders. The theme-based curriculum gives our teachers the flexibility to allow learners to follow their interests and take tiny steps towards a successful tomorrow. Our teachers have the experience and flexibility to build age-appropriate themes based on the interests of the particular group of students.

At RTSE students are not only molded into confident, successful individuals but are also inspired to become better responsible human being. We help our students to see connections and explore cause and effects. Emphasis is put on arts and culture for developing empathy and sensitivity. Rather than teaching each skill or topic in isolation students are encouraged to see that at different times of the day or through different subjects we can learn about different aspects of a larger topic. In turn, this helps students to learn to make connections and initiate their own responses from one experience to another. This is the manner in which learners learn to think creatively out-of-the-box and innovate. Success follows originality.
